Who We Are

Over the last 15 years, Blunk Street Music owners Chris Plum and Jeff Hupp have collectively covered the world in supporting their brand of Detroit Rock and Roll.

plum :: Chris Plum, PH. D ::
Chris is the lead singer/songwriter for one of Detroit’s most beloved bands “The Mood Elevator” (which included pop sensation Brendan Benson of ‘The Raconteurs’ fame), has provided music for The Detroit Redwings, performed music for commercials and has rocked late night television, as well as syndicated television shows. Chris has toured the world opening for bands like The White Stripes, Beth Orton, Sonic Youth and The Flaming Lips. He also appears in the now-legendary indie films, “It came from Detroit” and “Detroit Rock Movie.” Oh – did we mentioned Chris has a Doctorate in Education?

plum :: Jeff Hupp ::
Partner Jeff Hupp has played over the years with countless Detroit area bands and artists. As bass player in the semi-legendary Detroit band, “The Atomic Numbers”, Jeff toured the States and played major music festivals, including South by Southwest, North by Northeast and CMJ Music Marathon. Jeff & the Atomic Numbers has had music placed in several advertising campaigns, including the Budweiser “unsigned music search”, and has had music appearing in film, within the Jeff Daniels 2001 movie “Supersuckers.” Jeff has worked in the Detroit advertising world for over 15 years, working for J. Walter Thompson, the Digital signage start-up, Destination Media and Yahoo!. In his spare time, Jeff pretends he has spare time.

COMPOSERS

plum :: Art Hays ::
New York-based Art Hays has been performing and writing music professionally since 1989. While at University of North Texas on a jazz music scholarship, he toured Texas and the South, playing sax with funk band Goodfoot and also led his own three-piece rock band, Fletcher. After moving to New York, Art toured US, UK, Canada, and Australia with Matchbox Twenty playing sax and guitar on the Mad Season Tour from 2000-01. He also performed with them on Jay Leno, David Letterman, VH1, and Rosie O’Donnell. Art was also a member of Carbondale, who signed with RCA in 2001. Their CD, ’cause 7 ate 9, was produced by John Fields in 2002.

Since then Art has produced independent singer-songwriters in the New York area and has written music for commercials and industrial spots. His music was also featured as part of the ‘08 Beijing Olympics broadcast on NBC as well as The Oxygen Network and Access Hollywood. Two co-writes are a part of the soundtrack for the documentary “FEAT.” He performed music for the films “Meet The Spartans” and “Lost Boys II” and has recorded music for the EA video games “Boogie” and “American Idol.”

Art keeps a healthy songwriting schedule.

:: Zach Shipps ::
Producer / composer Zach Shipps has spent the last decade touring the world (1000+ shows on five continents) with Electric Six and Brendan Benson (Raconteurs), sharing stages with the likes of The Flaming Lips, White Stripes, Morrissey, and Sonic Youth. He’s been involved in countless recording projects as player, producer, composer, mixer, re-mixer, etc… for bands / clients like Ladytron, Midnight Juggernauts, Old Spice, Warner Brothers, Chevrolet, and Milk. He operates a studio out of his home in suburban Detroit. He hates onions.

reed :: Andy Reed ::
Located in the remote hinterlands of mid-Michigan, singer/songwriter/producer Andy Reed runs his own analog and digital recording studio, “Reed Recording Company”. Andy started his career as a third of Michigan power-pop trio “The Haskels” by recording the band’s debut with none other than Pop sensation, Brendan Benson (now of The Raconteurs fame) at the helm. A few years later Andy joined ½ of Detroit’s “The Atomic Numbers” to form the low-fi heroes “The Rioteers”. Finally, Andy tired of the band mutations, and embarked on a solo career. He signed with the indie pop label Kool Kat Musik, and has released two records to date. His latest record, “Fast Forward”, was well received and appeared on several 2008 “years best albums” lists. Andy continues to run his surname studio and continues to work with numerous Michigan bands, as well as national acts, including the Michigan natives, The Verve Pipe. Andy is currently holed up in his studio writing and recording his next solo record. Pray for him.

vonb :: Kristin von Bernthal ::
A self-taught instrumentalist since her pre-school days, Kristin began writing songs in high school, and later wrote, arranged, recorded and traveled with her band, Lollipop Guild, garnering major label A&R interest in the 90s. She has since collaborated on various musical projects around the Detroit area, singing and playing guitar, keys, bass or drums, and showcasing her songs in an occasional solo acoustic performance. Her vocal work can be heard on releases by Electric Six, Taproot, Brandon Calhoon and countless others, as well as in the recent adver-rock-opera, “Battle for Milkquarious“. As part of Blunk, she has composed music for local and national ad campaigns, as well as NBC’s “The Sing Off“. She currently performs with and arranges rock songs for The Barrettes Ladies Barbershop Quartet and plays drums for Detroit-based girl pop trio, Swamp Sisters. When not actively arranging, she lies humming and gazing at clouds in hazy emerald meadows surrounded by rainbows and pixie dust.

:: Todd Bowie ::
No, he is no relation to David Bowie. But the New Hampshire native did grow up believing he was related to 19th Century frontier legend Jim Bowie. Todd has since lost the coon-skin cap and now focuses on creating music in his Midwest studio. The multi-instrumentalist served 14 years as backline technician and audio engineer for the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Beck, and The Flaming Lips. Todd took time off from touring to record his own well-received album “Lucky Space People,” while also producing a slew of independent artists in the Chicago area. He now fronts Midwest party band The Karlz with former Verve Pipe member Doug Corella. He currently lives in Southern Wisconsin with his wife and daughter, where he studies Visual Communications and trades beaver pelts.
